Recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world. —Preamble of the UDHR, 1948
There is something very communicative at the heart of human rights. As a concept, human rights are simultaneous hope and desire for the way our being in this world together. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) 1948 grasps the agony of the human situation and shapes the responses to surrounding the idea of ‘dignity’. What do we see when we see human rights? The relation between what we see and what we know is never settled. Yet we try to project the idea of human rights in many forms. Human rights messages can better be conveyed through images, photographs or a combination of texts and images. With a view to promoting the idea of human rights imagery, ELCOP, on the 75th anniversary of the UDHR’s adoption, attempts to organize a poster presentation competition keeping the theme of “image and human rights” in mind.
